What Is A Facial Peel?

A chemical or facial peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother. Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, discolored skin and even scars.

Chemical or facial peels can improve the skin’s appearance. A facial peel involves a solution that is applied to the skin. This solution makes the skin “blister” and eventually peel off. The new skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
    Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills
  • Improve the look and feel of skin

Areas of skin that may have been damaged by the sun may improve after a facial or chemical peel.

After a chemical peel, your skin will be temporarily more sensitive to the sun. Therefore it is essential to wear sunscreen every day, which you should be doing anyway. The sunscreen should say “broad-spectrum” on the label, meaning it protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Also, it should be a physical sunscreen and be above SPF 30.

Even with a sunscreen with an SPF above 30 you should limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. You may also want to wear a wide-brimmed hat (a fashionable wide-brimmed hat, of course!).
